Traveling alone to South Korea: A essential travel checklist, including the complete process for making an appointment with a Dermatology specialist

Going to South Korea alone for the first time can be a bit stressful: language barriers, unfamiliar procedures, concerns about forgetting anything, and the fear of getting overwhelmed at the airport. But in reality, as long as you prepare thoroughly before departure, traveling there alone can be a great experience—free, relaxed, and allowing you to go wherever you want ✨ In this article, I’ll share with you a checklist of things that I’ve found to be effective when preparing to go to South Korea alone. Just tick off the items as you go, and you’ll likely have a smooth trip.

I. Travel and Accommodation Documents (an electronic version is sufficient)

✅ Electronic copy of the flight itinerary ✈

Keep a copy in your phone, and also store one in the cloud or via email. There’s no need to print it out, but make sure you can access it immediately after getting off the plane.

✅ Hotel reservation confirmation 🏨 (electronic version)

You will need it for entering the country, check-in at the front desk, and taking taxis. It is recommended to save both the English name and the Korean name of your hotel.

II. Visa and entry requirements (important!)

✅ Printed version of the e-visa + electronic version

Strong recommendation: Print out a copy to carry in your phone and save another PDF version. This can really save you a lot of time when explaining things during the process.

✅ Apply for the electronic declaration card (K-ETA/entry declaration) 3 days in advance, as it will be required when completing the relevant forms.

  • Hotel Name
  • Hotel telephone
  • Hotel address
  • 👉 It is recommended to prepare a written note in advance and simply copy it when needed, so as to remain calm and composed.

III. Cash and Payment Reserves

✅ Scheduled bank exchange for approximately 200,000 South Korean won (200,000 w)

  • It is recommended to use the foreign exchange purchase and sale system, as the exchange rates are more stable in this way.
  • It’s very convenient right after arriving at the airport: buying a card, taking transportation, and dining at small restaurants.

✅ Bank card / Visa card 💳

  • Using credit cards is very common in South Korea.
  • However, small shops and vending machines still prefer cash.

IV. Essential for transportation: T-money card

✅ T-money transportation card (can be purchased upon arrival)

  • There’s no need to purchase items online in advance.
  • AREX Entrance, Ground Floor B1, Incheon Airport
  • You can purchase them at the self-service card vending machines near the subway station.

💰 Top-up method: Cash top-up

  • It is recommended to top up with 10,000 Korean won for the first time.

✔ Can be used for:

  • subway
  • public transportation
  • Some convenience stores

V. Documents & Personal Items

✅ ID card + passport + visa card (all should be placed in the same wallet)

  • Always carry your passport with you; do not check it in.
  • It would be more convenient to prepare a passport organizer for easy access.

✅ Data cards / International roaming services

  • Activate before departure.
  • Dual protections for greater peace of mind when using the signal.

✅ SIM card holder (for replacing data cards)

  • It is easily overlooked.
  • It would be really troublesome if you didn’t bring it.

✅ Convertible head 🔌

  • Buying data cards usually comes with additional benefits.
  • South Korea uses round-hole plugs.

VI. Some small items that may seem insignificant but are actually very useful

🖊 Black gel pen

  • These forms and temporary registration processes can all be utilized.

🔋 Power bank

  • Map + Translation + Photography = The battery drains quickly.
  • When traveling alone, it is even more important to ensure that you remain connected at all times.

VII. Essential travel apps – make sure to download them in advance.

📱 Papago

  • The most friendly in the Korean local community
  • Ordering food, asking for directions, and communicating – almost everything depends on it.
  • It understands the real context of Korean language better than many translation software.

🗺 Naver Maps / Google Maps

  • Naver Maps: The most accurate local mapping service in South Korea, with clear information on buses, subways, and walking routes.
  • Google Maps: Can be used as an alternative option, as it makes it very convenient to view the overall route.

👉 It is recommended to install both options, as they complement each other.

🚕 Uber / Kakao T for taxi services

  • Kakao T is the most commonly used taxi app in South Korea.
  • You don’t need to know Korean to book a car directly.
  • It’s truly a lifesaver when it’s evening or when you have a lot of luggage to carry.

💄 BeautsGO · Beauty Together (Korean dermatology/medical beauty appointments) If you are coming to Korea and want to experience the “unique dermatology services of Korea,” it is really recommended that you do some research in advance.

In my case, I booked in advance on BeautsGO.

Just 5 simple steps are enough:

1️⃣ Download and register BeautsGO before you set off.

  • With a Chinese interface, it’s much more convenient to register in advance.

2️⃣ First, select the treatment you want to undergo; then choose the hospital where it will be performed.

  • Skin care / anti-aging / brightening treatments, etc.
  • The platform will match users who specialize in Korean dermatology.
  • You can directly see the reference price and location.

3️⃣ Confirm the appointment time via online consultation in Chinese.

  • Confirm in advance whether it is suitable for you.
  • Avoid discovering at the hospital that the procedure cannot be performed or that there is not enough time.

4️⃣ Submit the reservation request, and the platform will connect you with the hospital.

  • There’s no need to dial Korean numbers yourself.
  • You will receive a confirmation message once your reservation is successful.

5️⃣ Upon arrival at the clinic, simply present your reservation information.

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes in advance.
  • Most processes include assistance with communication, making them very user-friendly for newcomers.

👉 After the procedure, there will be online follow-up and important notes provided, so you won’t be alone without anyone to turn to when traveling alone.

🛂 SMART PASS (Electronic exit document when leaving Korea)

  • Register in advance
  • On the day of returning to the country, you can use the electronic channel.
  • During peak periods, it’s truly possible to save a considerable amount of time.

Final summary ✨ When traveling to South Korea alone, what truly provides peace of mind is not the amount of research you do beforehand, but whether you have taken all the necessary basic preparations before setting off.
